MIAMI >> A tropical storm watch has been issued for the coast of southwestern Mexico following the formation of Tropical Storm Erick in eastern Pacific; it's the 5th named storm of season.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said this afternoon the watch is in effect from Acapulco to Fortuna.
Erick was centered 140 miles south of Acapulco. It was moving toward the northwest near 12 mph and had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.
The center says the center of the storm is expected to move parallel to the southwestern Mexico coast but remain offshore.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Dalila, which had been a hurricane earlier in the week, weakened to a tropical depression in the eastern Pacific tonight.
It's too early to say if the new storm or what's left of Dalila will have any effect on Hawaii's weather.
What's left of former Hurricane Cosme has moved northeast of Hawaii. The storm is sending some small waves to northeast shores and has slowed the usual cooling trade winds. Winds are expected to be light through the weekend until stronger trade winds return early next week.
