If you have an old smartphone lying around, put it to good use by turning it into a tracking device so you can recover your bike or other property if it gets stolen. The magic ingredient here is Prey, the free laptop, tablet, and smartphone tracking app.
Brazilian electrical bike owner Fernanda uses an old Android phone running Prey to keep her bike safe. She has the phone stored in the bike's tail box, with an external battery charger that keeps the phone running for about 40 hours.
You could whip up a tracking system like this and hide it perhaps under the bike saddle. It might also be an inexpensive Lo-Jack-like solution for your car.
With a prepaid or pay-as-you go data plan, the system shouldn't cost you very much. If your bike or other valuable item gets nabbed, all you have to do is log into the Prey control panel and track it down. Clever, right?
