Being home full-time to care for?a family has many advantages.? For example, if a child is sick no need to call into work to tell them you are staying home.? If? a child has?a school function it?s easy to?attend without having to take time off work.? And if your home needs repairs you can be home without worrying what needs to be done back at work.
However, being home full-time has disadvantages too.? It?s harder to put on a r?sum? the work you are do if?you want to get hired outside the home.? It?s assumed you?ll do most of the housework, shopping, school functions because you?re available to do so.? But the greatest disadvantage is how the family seems to view you as their personal assistant.? You know,?someone who works exclusively for one person.
Of all my family members its Old Boy who expects the most from me.? He seems to be under the impression that I have nothing else to do, but meet his needs.? Let me show you what I mean.? Here are some of the texts he has sent me.
As I waited in the school parking lot Old boy sent this text.
?Hey, I need to stay behind after school to take a quiz for spanish that I missed while I had chicken pox? ? Old Boy
?How long will that take?? ? Mom
?Half and hour.? I think.?? ? Old Boy
?Okay.? We will wait for you.? ? Mom
?Uhhh?just take everyone home.? It?ll be a while.? ? Old Boy
So I ended up taking the rest of crew home and returned later to pick up Old Boy.? When Old Boy was in search of a costume, two days before Halloween, I received these texts.
?Hey , can we head to a thrift store sometime today?? I want to get some stuff for my Halloween costume.? ? Old Boy
?Yes.? But be aware supplies may be low.?? I go will go to one store today. ? ? Mom
We had no luck at the first thrift store,? so Old Boy made a request to go to another one.
?Do you think you will able to stop by the salvation army or goodwill today?? Pleeeaaassseee???
?I will try.? No more texting during school hours?focus.? ? Mom
The lab coat Old Boy hoped for could not be found.? I did find a pair of scrubs for him to wear, but Old Boy was insistent that he needed a lab coat.? Another request.
?Mom, could you PLEASE take me to the medical uniform place by our house so I can get a lab coat?? Please????- Old Boy
?I?m sorry buddy, but I?m getting my hair colored.? It?s too late.? You can wear the scrubs if you want.? ? Mom
?What?? Are you serious?!?!? ? Old Boy
?Yup.? It?s too late.? Figure out another plan for a costume.? ? Mom
After the Halloween costume disaster I spoke with Old boy about planning ahead and keeping in mind I?m not a personal assistant.? The conversation went well?or so I thought.? A few days later more texts with new requests.
?Hey, when you get here for the exhibition, could you please bring be my white dress shirt and the tricorn colonial hat we have?? ? Old Boy
?Yes, but I thought we talked about planning ahead.? I don?t work for you buddy.? -? Mom
?Okay.? I know.? Just this one last time.?? Pleeaase!!? ? Old Boy
Apparently the one last time meant one more time.
?Hey Mom!? Would it be possible for you to run to the store to get me a compass? (The kind you use in math to make circles).? ? Old Boy
?No.? I?m ?busy.? ? Mom
?You?re busy?? Doing what?? ? Old Boy
?Having lunch with a friend.? You can walk up to the store and buy a compass after school.? ? Mom
?What?? Really?? ? Old Boy
?Yes.? I?m quitting my job as your personal assistant today.? Have?a good day at school, stop texting and focus.? Love you.? ? Mom
Quitting my job as? Old Boy?s personal assistant has worked great.??He is better at planning ahead and?I have more time to get the hundreds of other things I need to get done for the family.
Being a personal assistant wouldn?t be a bad job if I was getting paid for it.? If I ever do want get a job being one, I know the boy to put on my reference list.
