The family of an RCMP officer killed in a crash while on duty in Surrey, B.C., on Tuesday expressed its gratitude for the "outpouring of support and strength received from across Canada" since the tragic accident.
"It is truly hard to express the feelings we have as we deal with the tragic and unthinkable loss of a son, brother, grandson, lifelong companion, friend, colleague and police officer," the family said in a statement posted on the RCMP's site. "It is also hard to comprehend the impact his passing has had on the greater community and country he was committed to serve."
Const. Adrian Oliver, 28, was driving an unmarked police car at about 5 a.m. Tuesday when the crash happened at an intersection.
Emergency crews tried to get Oliver out of the car but he died.
A funeral for Oliver will be held Tuesday in Langley and members of the public are invited to attend.
Oliver's family said that it wanted Canadians to know that "Adrian was a truly compassionate and caring man with an infectious smile and willingness to help anyone and everyone he could. He had a great passion for policing and was equally dedicated to his family and friends."
Oliver's father is an RCMP officer in Ottawa and his brother is an RCMP officer in B.C.
The family is encouraging anyone who would like to honour Oliver's life to support the Honour House Society.
Honour House provides a temporary home for Canadian Forces personnel, veterans, first responders and their families while they are receiving medical care and treatment in the Vancouver area.
