Rep. Bob Goodlatte Discusses Immigration Reform - WHSV.com

WASHINGTON, D.C.--A Senator expects an immigration reform bill to pass the Senate by July 4.

This bill approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee would give a path to citizenship to undocumented immigrants, enact new border controls and workplace enforcement. It would also give a visa system to low and high skilled workers.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he anticipates as many as 70 out of 100 senators to vote in favor of the measure.

However, members of the House of Representatives do not expect the same bill to move in the House. They plan to work on their own version of the bill.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Virginia) said members would take a step-by-step approach. The measure would fix legal immigration, our enforcement and it would define a legal status for undocumented immigrants.

"I - - I do not think a special pathway to citizenship should be provided at all. But a legal status should not be provided before we have underway the actual implementation of a number of reforms, not just border security, but interior enforcement," said Goodlatte.

He said the final version of the legislate is not known yet.
