The United States wants more than an apology from Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi regarding his anti-Semitic rhetoric.
Morsi made anti-Jewish and anti-Israel comments before he took office. But he now says he rejects discrimination and incitement to violence based on religion.
The White House said that's not enough to ease concerns.
Members of Congress also called on Morsi to show a commitment to religious tolerance and Egypt's peace treaty with Israel.
Morsi met with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in Cairo on Wednesday.
"In our meeting with President Morsi, we voiced our strong disapproval of statements he made a few years ago that have recently surfaced. We had a constructive discussion on this subject," McCain told reporters following the meeting.
"We leave it to the president to make any further comments on this matter that he may wish," he said.
