Stop. Think. Connect. Cyber Security for Businesses | Ethical ...

As we move further into the new millennium, with new technology being developed daily, one thing is becoming readily apparent.? The new threat to our individual and national security is not from a criminal with a gun or an extremist with a bomb; it is from a cyber-criminal with a computer and an internet connection.? That is why the Department of Homeland Security has established new campaign called ?Stop.? Think.? Connect.?? This campaign is meant to encourage everyone, from schoolchildren to senior citizens, to take personal responsibility for their own computer usage and to do their part in maintaining cyber security.

One aspect of this is in the form of cyber security for small and personal businesses.? According to the Department of Homeland Security, almost half of all cyber attacks are against small businesses with less than five hundred employees.? Perhaps more shocking, only 52% of small businesses have a cyber security plan and 40% have no response plan in the event that they are attacked by hackers.? In this day, this is incredibly dangerous for the safety and well-being of your business.? The average cost of a cyber attack on smallCyber Security business from 2009-2010 amount to almost $200,000 per attack.? This would cripple most small companies.?? That is why it is so important to have not only a security plan but also a response plan in the event of an attack.

As far as instituting a security plan to help prevent an attack, the Department of Homeland Security has identified the following steps:

  • Define responsibilities? Before you do anything else, you should sit down with your staff and designate who will be in charge of each aspect including implementation and training.
  • Set up policies for internet and social media usage? You should define rules for your employees to govern how they can use office computers for both general internet and social media usage.
  • Train your employees?Employees need to know how to recognize everything from social engineering, online fraud, fake antivirus offers, phishing, malware and malicious software.? They should also be trained to use the same security measures when using email outside of work and also their company issued smartphones which can compromise your business?s network.
  • Encrypt and protect off-site usage?Make sure that all computers that are allowed to access the network remotely are up to date with virus software.? Also, make sure that smartphones are encrypted and train employees to be aware of their surroundings so that they don?t enter passwords or view sensitive information when others may be looking over their shoulders.
  • Dispose of trash and equipment properly?Use a shredder or shredding service to destroy all of your sensitive documents and mail to ensure that no one can snoop through your trash and find information about you or your clients.? When upgrading equipment, be sure to properly dispose of the old equipment, wiping the hard drives and destroying the SIM cards so that data cannot be retrieved by dumpster-diving criminals.

This is a great deal of material to process and it is just the tip of the iceberg, but it is not a plan that has to be completed overnight.? Developing a cyber security plan should take time to make sure that it is well thought out and implemented properly.? In our next installment, we will look at how to develop a secondary plan in the event of a worst-case-scenario, a response to an actual attack.

33 dead in flood in typhoon-hit south Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? A Philippine governor says at least 33 villagers and soldiers have drowned when torrents of water dumped by a powerful typhoon rushed down a mountain, engulfing the victims and bringing the death toll from the storm to about 40.

Gov. Arturo Uy says rain from Typhoon Bopha accumulated atop a mountain and then burst down on Andap village in New Bataan town in Compostela Valley early Tuesday.

Uy says the victims included villagers who had fled from their homes to a village hall, which was swamped by the flash flood. An army truck carrying soldiers and villagers also was washed away.

The tragedy brought the typhoon death toll to about 40.

Stocks dip as investors seek fiscal cliff progress

46 min.

Stocks finished slightly lower in a quiet session on Tuesday as the back-and-forth wrangling over the "fiscal cliff" gave investors little reason to act.?

Trading volume was light as legislators continue to negotiate a deal to avoid a $600 billion package of tax hikes and federal spending cuts that would begin January 1 and could push the economy into recession.?

Just 5.86 billion shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, below the year's daily average of 6.48 billion shares.?

A key measure of investor anxiety has remained muted. The CBOE Volatility Index or VIX, a gauge of market anxiety, was at 17.13, up 2.9 percent. It has not traded above 20 since July.?

Optimism for progress was dented after remarks by President Barack Obama, who rejected a Republican proposal to resolve the crisis as "out of balance" and said any deal must include a rise in income tax rates on the wealthiest Americans.?

"People don't know if what's going on is political posturing or real negotiations that represent progress," said Bernard Baumohl, managing director and chief global economist at the Economic Outlook Group in Princeton, New Jersey.?

Expectations of higher taxes on dividends beginning in 2013 have pushed many companies to pay special dividends this year or advance their next payback to investors. Coach became the latest to move up the date of its next dividend payment, and the news lifted shares of the upscale leather-goods maker earlier in the session. By the close, though, Coach was down 1.2 percent at $57.52.?

One of the S&P 500's top sectors for the day was health care.?

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 13.82 points, or 0.11 percent, to 12,951.78 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index dipped 2.41 points, or 0.17 percent, to 1,407.05. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 5.51 points, or 0.18 percent, to close at 2,996.69.?

The market has been sensitive to rhetoric from Washington, as a failure to reach an agreement could send the U.S. economy back into recession. Still, many expect a resolution to be found, which could extend the S&P 500's rally of 12 percent so far this year.?

Differences within the Republican Party came to the fore on Tuesday as one senator opposed to raising taxes lashed out at Republican House Speaker John Boehner for proposing to increase revenue by closing some tax loopholes.?

Congressional Republicans recently proposed steep spending cuts to bring down the budget deficit, but gave no ground on Obama's call to raise tax rates on the rich. The proposal was quickly dismissed by the White House.?

"We're on hold trying to figure it out, but investors are stressed since they have to make decisions soon about how to proceed with their investments if taxes are indeed going up. We could see a real pick-up in volume over the next week or so," Baumohl said.?

Netflix Inc was the S&P 500's top percentage gainer, advancing 14 percent to $86.65 after Walt Disney Co agreed to give the company exclusive TV distribution rights to its movies, starting in 2016.?

Darden Restaurants Inc shares plunged 9.6 percent to $47.40 as the S&P 500's worst performer after the company warned that its latest quarter would miss expectations after unsuccessful promotions led to a decline in sales at its Olive Garden, Red Lobster and LongHorn Steakhouse chains.?

In contrast, Big Lots Inc surged 11.5 percent to $31.27 after the close-out retailer posted a smaller-than-expected loss and boosted its full-year adjusted earnings forecast.?

MetroPCS Communications shares tumbled 7.5 percent to $9.96 after Sprint Nextel appeared unlikely to make a counter-offer for the wireless service provider.?

Almost half of the stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange closed lower, while 50 percent of Nasdaq-listed shares closed in negative territory.?

After the closing bell, Pandora Media Inc shares plunged 23 percent after the company reported its third-quarter results.?

Record high for global carbon emissions

Monday, December 3, 2012

Global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are set to rise again in 2012, reaching a record high of 35.6 billion tonnes - according to new figures from the Global Carbon Project, co-led by researchers from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia (UEA).

The 2.6 per cent rise projected for 2012 means global emissions from burning fossil fuel are 58 per cent above 1990 levels, the baseline year for the Kyoto Protocol.

This latest analysis by the Global Carbon Project is published today in the journal Nature Climate Change with full data released simultaneously by the journal Earth System Science Data Discussions.

It shows the biggest contributors to global emissions in 2011 were China (28 per cent), the United States (16 per cent), the European Union (11 per cent), and India (7 per cent).

Emissions in China and India grew by 9.9 and 7.5 per cent in 2011, while those of the United States and the European Union decreased by 1.8 and 2.8 per cent.

Emissions per person in China of 6.6 tonnes of CO2 were nearly as high as those of the European Union (7.3), but still below the 17.2 tonnes of carbon used in the United States. Emissions in India were lower at 1.8 tonnes of carbon per person.

Prof Corinne Le Qu?r?, director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and professor at UEA, led the publication of the data. She said: "These latest figures come amidst climate talks in Doha. But with emissions continuing to grow, it's as if no-one is listening to the entire scientific community."

The 2012 rise further opens the gap between real-world emissions and those required to keep global warming below the international target of two degrees.

"I am worried that the risks of dangerous climate change are too high on our current emissions trajectory. We need a radical plan," added Prof Corinne Le Qu?r?.

The analysis published in Nature Climate Change shows significant emission reductions are needed by 2020 to keep two degrees as a feasible goal.

It shows previous energy transitions in Belgium, Denmark, France, Sweden, and the UK have led to emission reductions as high as 5 per cent each year over decade-long periods, even without climate policy.

Lead author Dr Glen Peters, of the Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research in Norway, said: "Scaling up similar energy transitions across more countries can kick-start global mitigation with low costs. To deepen and sustain these energy transitions in a broad range of countries requires aggressive policy drivers."

Co-author Dr Charlie Wilson, of the Tyndall Centre at UEA, added: "Public policies and institutions have a central role to play in supporting the widespread deployment of low carbon and efficient energy-using technologies, and in supporting innovation efforts".

Emissions from deforestation and other land-use change added 10 per cent to the emissions from burning fossil fuels. The CO2 concentration in the atmosphere reached 391 parts per million (ppm) at the end of 2011.

These results lends further urgency to recent reports that current emissions pathways are already dangerously high and could lead to serious impacts and high costs on society. These other analyses come from the International Energy Agency, the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Bank, the European Environment Agency, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Suspected Islamists kill 10 Christians in Nigeria

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Suspected Islamist fighters went on the rampage in northeast Nigeria overnight, killing 10 Christians with guns and machetes and burning down their houses, witnesses said on Sunday.

The attack happened in a village called Chibok, in a remote part of northeastern Borno state, at the heart of an insurgency led by Islamist sect Boko Haram.

"Suspected Boko Haram came at night and set people's houses on fire before killing their victims," said Nuhu Clark, a former councilor of the village who escaped the attack. He said he counted 10 bodies afterwards.

A police spokesman said they were aware of the incident but were still trying to confirm casualties.

Islamist fighters have killed hundreds of people since launching an uprising against the government in 2009, the usual targets being security forces, government officials or Christians, whom Boko Haram sees as infidels.

They are considered the top security threat to Africa's leading energy producer. The instability has also enabled purely criminal gangs to kill or rob with virtual impunity.

In a separate incident, militants burned down three churches on Saturday in Gamboru, also in Borno state, said trader Umar Abubakar, who witnessed the attack.

Security forces said on Sunday they had killed a senior Boko Haram commander Mohammed Ibrahim, one of several who had a bounty placed on his head last week - of 25 million naira ($158,900) in his case.

"He was killed in an operation in Gwange ward (Borno state) along with two of his unit commanders," said a spokesman for joint military and police forces in Borno state, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa.

Attacks on Christians seem calculated to ignite sectarian tensions in Africa's most populous nation, which is split roughly evenly between Muslims and Christians. They mostly live side by side in peace, although bouts of violence between the communities sometimes flare up.

Boko Haram wants to carve out an Islamic state in northern Nigeria. Human Rights Watch has said around 3,000 people have been killed in the conflict since its insurgency intensified in 2010. The United States has designated three of Boko Haram's senior members as terrorists.

Its leader Abubakar Shekau praised jihadist movements across the globe on Thursday in a new video, and singled out the United States, Britain, Israel and Nigeria as enemies.

5 Ingredients Essential to Good Mentoring RelationshipWhat goes into a successful relationship between a mentor and mentee?

According to new research, those being mentored should be open to feedback, be active listeners, be respectful of their mentor?s time ? including being on time and prepared for meetings ? and should follow at least some of their mentor?s advice.

?Successful mentorship is vital to career success and satisfaction for both mentors and mentees,? said Dr. Sharon Straus, a researcher at St. Michael?s Hospital and author of the paper published online in Academic Medicine.

Straus examined mentor-mentee relationships at two large academic health centers, the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine and the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, where she is director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine. And while her focus was on teaching hospitals, she said she believes many of her findings could apply to other professions.

Her research identified five key ingredients necessary for a successful mentoring relationship: reciprocity, mutual respect, clear expectations, personal connections and shared values.

Failed relationships were characterized by poor communication, lack of commitment, personality differences, perceived or real competition, conflicts of interest and the mentor?s inexperience.

Faculty members interviewed for her study said mentees need to take their mentors? advice seriously. They don?t have to accept every word, but if they ignore most of the advice, it?s a fruitless relationship, she noted.

Good mentors were said to be honest, trustworthy and active listeners, meaning they were engaged with the mentee during each session, focused on the issues identified by the mentee and helped the mentee set goals.

The good ones also had a network of colleagues and collaborators who could open doors for their mentees, help jump-start their careers or just explain how the system works, Straus said. In addition to providing career advice, they also helped their mentees achieve work-life balance.

?One of the key challenges for mentors and mentees is a lack of time and participants stated that the effective mentors ensured that they remained accessible to their mentees even if they were located at a distance,? Straus said. ?Although they may not be able to meet in person regularly, effective mentors used email and phone contact to ensure accessibility.?

Good mentors also warned mentees of potential pitfalls, according to the researcher. One mentee described this role as being like a ?guardian angel [who] prevents you from hitting yourself when you know something is falling from the sky.?

Previous studies have found that effective mentorship produces university faculty who are more productive, are promoted more quickly and are more likely to stay at their institutions. Given the importance of mentoring, she recommends training programs focusing on promoting the characteristics of effective mentoring.

But what should you do if the mentoring relationship just isn?t working?

Straus said strategies include using a mentorship facilitator or the department chair as a mediator, as well as implementing a ?no-fault divorce? rule so either side can end the relationship.
